On Tuesday 29th July 2008 I was diagnosed as having type 2 diabetes at Samitivej Hospital, Bangkok.
Over the past three years I had lost quite a bit of weight and, due to encouragement from my wife and mother (who was visiting from Ireland) I decided to go to the hospital and get checked up. Initially the doctor was talking about cancer which was really worrying. I had various blood tests, an x-ray and utlrasound.
I was really nervous when I went for the results and was actually quite releived when I was diagnosed as having diabetes (and not cancer!).
When I started researching what I could and could not eat and drink it all became daunting quickly. No more going out on the beer when I want, no more chocolate bars when I feel like it.
Now I’ve been living with diabetes for a week now I’m actually starting to feel better! I’m nowhere near as thirsty as I have been for the past year or more and I’m starting to feel like I have more energy. The diet (although limited at the moment as I learn what I can eat without raising my Blood Sugar (BS) too far) is obviously much more healthy as it has limited carbs, no sugar and lots of fruit and vegetables.
When I was first diagnosed my BS was 300mg/dl – 16.6mmol/l which is quite high.
I purchased a BS testing kit (One Touch Ultra from LifeScan) to test my fasting BS (i.e. before eating anything in the morning) levels each morning.
The purpose of this blog is to track my BS levels and note any changes in my diet that may cause spikes or drops.
